WRIISC-HOME An Update on Yoga as a Treatment for Chronic Symptoms of Gulf War Illness

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a common concern of veterans seen at War Related Illness & Injury Study Center (WRIISC). Current (2021) VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend the use of integrative health, including yoga. Our recent clinical trial showed that yoga was effective for treating chronic pain and fatigue in GWI up to six months following treatment. We also have data shedding light on possible biological mechanisms of action involving central and peripheral nervous system. WRIISC-HOME Suicide and Military Environmental Exposures: Addressing Suicide Risk and Chronic Pain with Problem-Solving Therapy

Chronic pain is common among Veterans with military environmental exposure concerns. Patients with chronic pain in the US have 2.6-times greater risk of suicide. Veterans with a history of military environmental exposures and chronic pain may present with a number of other factors that could increase suicide risk, including experiences of institutional betrayal, feeling as if their symptoms have been dismissed, lack of trust in the healthcare system, feeling isolated, and feeling like a burden to others. Problem-solving therapy is a promising treatment for this population because it targets problem-solving deficits which are known to increase risk of suicide, as well as problem-solving deficits that can make it difficult to prevent chronic pain from impairing daily activities and social relationships, which indirectly increases suicide risk. This webinar will present the results of a recent pilot study examining Problem-Solving Therapy as a treatment to reduce suicide risk among Veterans with chronic pain and military exposure concerns. Unfortunately, Veterans with chronic pain often do not receive mental health treatment and thus do not receive suicide prevention interventions. However, they do receive frequent healthcare for their pain, providing an unmet opportunity to integrate suicide prevention into their treatment for pain. Problem-Solving Therapy is an evidence-based approach that is available where patients actually receive treatment (e.g., primary care). This webinar will provide recent data on Problem-Solving Therapy for Veterans with chronic pain and military exposure concerns. Educating health care professionals on effective treatments to reduce suicide risk among Veterans with chronic pain and a history of military environmental exposures will directly impact Veterans by improving the care these Veteran's receive, and increasing access to effective suicide treatments. WRIISC-HOME What Does the Future Hold? Longitudinal evaluation of post-deployment respiratory symptoms

The purpose of this training is to address the critical need for healthcare providers to understand and monitor pulmonary function trajectories in Veterans exposed to airborne hazards during deployment. Longitudinal studies on post-deployment respiratory health are currently absent, as highlighted by the National Academies' report on respiratory health effects from airborne hazards in the Southwest Asia theater of military operations. This training aims to fill this gap by educating providers on the importance of tracking and understanding pulmonary function in symptomatic Veterans. Currently, healthcare providers may lack the knowledge and skills to identify and monitor key pulmonary function variables that are essential for assessing respiratory health over time in Veterans. This gap in understanding can result in missed opportunities for early intervention and proactive management of at-risk Veterans. By providing training on the longitudinal trajectories of pulmonary function tests (PFT) among deployed Veterans, this activity will enhance providers' ability to identify Veterans who require more aggressive monitoring and potential intervention. This knowledge will empower providers to make informed decisions, improve their competence in managing post-deployment respiratory health, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. The training will improve healthcare providers' performance by equipping them with the tools and insights needed to track and monitor pulmonary function variables effectively. This proactive approach will ensure that at-risk Veterans receive timely and appropriate care, leading to better management of respiratory health issues and improved quality of life for these individuals. WRIISC-HOME A Review of Integrative Health Practices for Chronic Multisymptom Illness

This training aims to improve the healthcare teams understanding and utilization of the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Chronic Multisymptom Illness (CMI), which aligns with the VA Whole Health program. Chronic multisymptom illness is a prevalent problem among veterans at the VA and the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC). Currently, many VA providers lack awareness regarding the specific complementary and integrative health (CIH) therapies recommended by these guidelines for treating CMI symptoms such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue. Through this webinar, healthcare providers will gain essential knowledge about the recommended CIH modalities, including yoga, tai chi, manual acupuncture, and physical exercise, and their application for various CMI symptoms. Additionally, we will highlight the WRIISC Clinical Telehealth Yoga Program, which provides online yoga classes accessible to veterans nationwide, fulfilling some recommendations of the guidelines. The anticipated outcome of this training is an enhancement in providers and; competence in referring and integrating CIH practices into treatment plans for veterans suffering from CMI. By doing so, we expect an improvement in patient outcomes as veterans are encouraged to engage with effective CIH modalities. This training will better equip providers to refer their patients to accessible and beneficial programs like the WRIISC Clinical Telehealth Yoga Program, ultimately promoting holistic health and well-being among the veteran population. Gulf War Illness and the Concordant Care Model

WRIISC-HOME What You Need to Know About Qarmat Ali and Chemical Warfare Agent Military Exposures

Since the start of the Iraq conflict, service members have reported military exposure(s) like sodium dichromate exposures at Qarmat Ali in 2003 and chemical warfare agent exposures. Veterans and providers who care for Veterans often have questions about how to address these Veteran exposure concerns. With the advent of the WRIISC's Complex Exposure Threats Center of Excellence, the VA has established surveillance protocols for Veterans with these types of military exposures. The purpose of this webinar is to describe the evaluations conducted to date and highlight reported health outcomes for these groups of Veterans. Historical context of these exposures to include past DoD exposure evaluations and VA follow-up evaluations will be reviewed. Potential health outcomes linked to these exposures will be discussed. Limitations of these evaluations will be highlighted. Next steps for how the Complex Exposure Threat Center of Excellence will follow these cohorts of Veterans also will be reviewed. The goal of this webinar is to provide Veterans with optimal exposure informed care by educating VA and non-VA providers about sodium dichromate and chemical warfare agents so that they will have this knowledge when evaluating Veterans who report these exposures. WRIISC-HOME Ovarian Cancer in Gulf War & Post- 9/11 Era Women Veterans

Ovarian cancer is a rare, but often deadly, gynecologic cancer in women Veterans. Academic literature from the civilian sector has questioned whether airborne hazards (e.g., particulate matter exposure) may contribute to the development of ovarian cancer. Our project investigates whether women deployed in support of the Gulf War or post-9/11 conflicts (a PACT Act proxy for exposure to airborne hazards and open burn pits) had an increased risk of ovarian cancer compared to non-deployed women Veterans. Much of the women-focused cancer research at VA has focused on breast cancer. Ovarian cancer has been understudied in military and Veteran settings, and no papers to our knowledge deeply explore risk among recent military cohorts (i.e., Gulf War women, post-9/11 conflict women). This presentation will inform clinicians on the ovarian cancer risk profile for women Veterans, and whether deployed or non-deployed women Veterans should be especially monitored. Our analyses will also cover demographic and military characteristics between cases and controls, allowing us to better understand contextual factors that may correlate with disease incidence.
